A Vision for Sustainablity at SPS
Sharon Public Schools (SPS) strives for sustainable practices in the district’s activities, processes, and environment. SPS aims to protect the environment and promote social and economic equity in our schools, in our community, and in the wider world.
We work to infuse awareness, values, and practices in our students’ lives and school experiences that connects with and reinforces our sustainability goals.
We seek to engage students in SPS’s sustainability commitment, providing them opportunities to apply concepts from the district and individual classrooms to real world problems, and encourage them to draw on these experiences to enrich what happens in the classroom and positively impact their community and their world!
Composting and Recycling in the Schools
SPS supports efforts to reduce our environmental impact through proper recycling practices.
Each classroom and common area is outfitted with mixed recycling receptacles. Mixed recycling is collected by Republic Services from each school weekly.
COMING SOON: Our goal for the 2022-23 school year is to see organics composting in all school cafeterias. A process to meet this goal is underway - contact the Recycling Coordinator for more info.
The Five Rs: Refuse/Reduce/Reuse/Recycle/Rot
SPS actively searches for ways to reduce our use of disposable items, create a clean recycle and compost stream that captures as many eligible items as possible, and properly trash items that would contaminate our recycling and composting efforts. In an effort to:
- Reduce our waste
- Divert materials from the landfill
- Reduce our costs: when we dispose of items in a landfill we pay more than we pay for recycling and composting services
- Refusing, Reducing, Reusing, Recycling, and Rotting helps us to model environmental stewardship for our students, staff, and school communities
